Daniel Akpeyi: ‘Chippa is a cool person’

Swallows FC goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi reckons that Chippa Mpengesi is a “cool person” and is humble in nature, despite his side being in the media domain for the wrong reasons lately.

Last week, Mpengesi became the talk of the town after showing Lehlohonolo Seema the exit door after helping the Chilli Boys finish 14th on the DStv Premiership table and survive the chop.

When we thought that was it, their former right-winger Jemondre Dickens came forward to claim that the Gqeberha side have neglected him after his contract ended last year June and they are not willing to pay for the costs of the wire removal on his knee.

DANIEL AKPEYI: ‘HE’S SOMEBODY WHO GOES WITH THE EMOTIONS’

When Akpeyi was quizzed about his former chairman, the Nigerian shot-stopper was asked how Mpengesi was during his stay at Chippa, he said: “I think for me Chippa is a good person to me.

“He’s somebody who goes with the emotions. When he’s happy, he’s happy, and when he’s not happy he’s not happy.

“So to me, I came to understand that he’s that kind of person.”

Akpeyi went on to tell FARPost about one scenario that he encountered with Mpengesi when they lost a game against Jomo Cosmos when he just arrived at the club.

“There was a scenario where we lost a game one time to Jomo Cosmos and it was my first time and I’m not the person who likes to talk much with coaches and all.

“So, I felt bad that we lost that game and thought I didn’t do well in the game. So I sent him a message to say chairman we are sorry we had a bad game but next time we will do better.

“And I got a message to say “no just focus on your game”, and I felt bad after reading the message. I felt like shouldn’t have done this [sent the message] you know.

“From that point, I realised that when he’s emotional he’s emotional. For me, he’s a cool person. But other stuff I really don’t know,” added the ex-Kaizer Chiefs goal-minder.

DANIEL AKPEYI GRATEFUL TO HAVE PLAYED FOR CHIPPA UNITED

Akpeyi, who spent four seasons at the Chilli Boys further stated that he’s grateful to have represented the Eastern Cape side because he learned a lot during his tenure at the club.

“Playing there it was actually a good thing for me to start because I thought I would play for a season and move to bigger teams cause I already knew Kaizer Chiefs, Sundowns, and Pirates,” revealed Akpeyi.

“However, I ended up being there four seasons which I’m grateful for, and learned a lot.”
