Ex-Pirates star reacts after winning a top French award

A former Orlando Pirates midfielder has reacted after winning a top French Ligue 1 award at a ceremony held on Sunday night.

Marshall Munetsi, received the 2022/23 Citizen Player Trophy for his sterling work off the field of play.

The former Orlando Pirates midfielder has been exceptional in the French Ligue 1 and his works have also shone in charity work.

And the French National Union of Professional Footballers (UNFP) rewarded him for the commendable work.

Munetsi was presented with the accolade in recognition for his dedication to his charity initiatives in Zimbabwe through his foundation.

The former Baroka and Orlando Pirates midfielder is involved in the fight against drug abuse and child marriages in Zimbabwe.

Reacting to the recognition, Munetsi posted on Facebook. “I am very honoured to receive this amazing award from the Trophées UNFP.

“So I would like to thank my club Stade de Reims for offering a platform to assist the underprivileged through the Marshall Munetsi Foundation.

“A special thanks to Wasserman for their amazing work in supporting me.”

Munetsi is in the books of French Ligue 1 side Reims where he has also been the teams stand-in captain.

Recently, the former Orlando Pirates midfielder revealed that he gives 10 percent of his salary to 60 children.

Through the Munetsi Foundation, he pays their school fees in the high-density suburb of Mabvuku, where he grew up.

The workhorse midfielder enforcer has also donated football kits to Kadyamadare Primary School in his home village in Mashonaland East.

Munetsi left Pirates in 2019 after penning a four-year deal with the Stade de Reims.

He extended his stay at the club by another year having established himself as a regular starter.

Reports in January linked him with Championship sides Watford and the newly promoted Burnley. However nothing materialized.
