PSL side pleads with Municipality not to neglect local teams
Motsepe Foundation Championship side Baroka FC have made a plea to the Polokwane Municipality to also support local PSL clubs just like they do with teams who have adopted the province as their home like Kaizer Chiefs.
The Polokwane Municipality and Chiefs have a three-year deal to host selected DStv Premiership matches. The move is aimed at bringing more revenue to the City, considering the number of following Amakhosi have. The move has been received with mixed reactions, with local clubs also questioning the lack of support from the Municipality.
LOCAL LIMPOPO PSL CLUBS PLEAD FOR MORE SUPPORT
Owner of the newly promoted side Polokwane City Johnny Mogaladi, also made the same plea following their return to the top division.
“I can’t do it alone, the teams in Durban are supported by their municipality. We don’t get that, but our stadiums are rented to other people [teams] who don’t belong to this province,” he said after their promotion.
KAIZER CHIEFS AND POLOKWANE MUNICIPALITY PARTNERSHIP
Baroka CEO Richard Mashabane has also brought up the same issue saying it’s time the Municipality takes the local club seriously.
“Teams like Kaizer Chiefs come to our province and are given the support, what about us local teams? What about these teams in the province because we are the ones bringing these teams from all over the country,” he said.
“It boasts the province in terms of job creation. But I think our Municipality and Department of Sports don’t see it that way.
“Go to KZN, and you will see how teams are well taken care of. You will never hear of unpaid salaries from those clubs. Because the Municipalities that side are putting something and help sustain the teams,” explained Mashabane.
Relegated DStv Premiership side, Marumo Gallants were also forced to move to North West and Free State. This is after they also raised concerns over support.
