Ex-Maritzburg goalie Barr waves goodbye to Irish side

Former Maritzburg United goalkeeper Jethren Barr has parted ways with Northern Irish side Portadown FC.

This comes after Portadown FC were relegated following a three-year stay in the Irish Premiership.

Barr, who is now looking for a new adventure was rewarded with a three-year deal in June 2022 by the then-Irish Premiership.

The South Africa goalkeeper got the new contract after an impressive run of performances in the 2021/2022 season. He featured in 38 games in all competitions and managed 11 clean sheets within that time.

His incredible displays even got him the Shamrock Reds Player of the Year Award.

And in the just-ended season, Barr made 29 appearances with five clean sheets to his name.

However, the ex-DStv Premiership player opted to cut his stay at the club short in order to look for better opportunities in a topflight league.

Barr’s representative, Siyavuma Sports Group MD Paul Mitchell confirmed to FARPost that the goalie is now unattached.

Mitchell stated that Barr is not short of suitors as several clubs, without mentioning names, have already shown interest in acquiring the services of the 27-year-old.

“Yes, Jethren Barr has left Portadown after they were relegated. So he is free, and we are looking at options for him,” said Mitchell.

“There has been some interest in him, at the moment, we can’t share the clubs. But with Jethren there has been interest from Europe.”

Barr, formerly with Bidvest Wits and Stellenbosch FC signed his first professional contract aged 16.

He made history when he made his senior league debut for the now-defunct Wits back in 2013 as he became the youngest professional goalkeeper ever to play in the Premiership.

In addition, he also played for the South African national team at Under 17, Under 20 and Under 23 level.

Barr was part of the Under 20 squad that won the Commonwealth of Independent States Cup in 2015.
