Why Itumeleng Khune deserves a contract extension at Chiefs

Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has explained why skipper Itumeleng Khune deserves a contract extension at the club.

Khune’s contract with the Soweto giants expires at the end of June 2023. Until now, there haven’t been talks between the two parties about a contract extension.

The former Bafana Bafana international has been struggling with injury setbacks in the previous seasons. This led him to lose his spot in the national team and club.

Khune had a decent amount of playing minutes in the just-ended season despite injuries. He played 13 matches in all competitions, kept two clean sheets and conceded 13 goals.

WHY ITUMELENG KHUNE DESERVES TO STAY AT KAIZER CHIEFS

Akpeyi believes Khune has more to offer The Glamour Boys on and off the field, as he has spent almost 19 years at the club. Therefore, he brings in much experience, and no player knows the club better.

“Khune has done well for the club. He has won trophies for the club. Being at the club for those years it’s massive,” Akpeyi told FARPost.

“Younger goalkeepers need to be nurtured by someone who has experience. That’s the only way that can help them grow. That’s why Khune needs to be there for some time to help these younger ones come up.

“It’s only proper for the team to allow younger ones when they think they are ok. I don’t think it’s proper to rush them and throw them in.”

“[Bruce Bvuma] I think he’s a great goalkeeper under Khune. He has learned a lot. He also deserves time to play.

KAIZER CHIEFS PLAYERS WITH CONTRACTS ENDING IN JUNE 2023

Amakhosi have a few players still awaiting contract extensions. Last week, the club parted ways with defender Eric Mathoho ending his 11-year stay.

The trio of Khama Billiat, Phathutshedzo Nange and Sifiso Hlanti’s contracts expire at the end of June. The club is expected to make announcements soon on the decision they would have taken.
