One element Pirates need to fix to compete with Sundowns
Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has revealed one element he needs to fix to compete with Mamelodi Sundowns next season.
Pirates finished the 2022/23 PSL season on a high note. The Bucs were unbeaten in their last nine league matches, recording seven victories and two draws.
Moreover, the Sea Robbers clinched the Nedbank Cup defeating stubborn Sekhukhune United 2-1 last Saturday in the final.
Despite Orlando Pirates’ good run, it was way too late, as Sundowns had already won the league. The Tshwane giants were consistent in their performances, undefeated in 20 matches with 14 wins and six draws.
WHAT JOSE RIVEIRO MUST WORK ON
The Spaniard says his team needs to be consistent in all their performances.
“We know that we lost key games last season and we need to find consistency because if you are not at the same level then it’s difficult to catch,” Riveiro told MSW.
“We were not that far from the usual points total to win the league but they [Sundowns] were exceptional and you have to congratulate them on that.
“I want to think that we are close, but you never know. We start from zero points but the development does not start from zero.
“You never know who will be fighting for the top but we have to compare to ourselves today with what we were yesterday and we have to respect all teams that compete with us.”
WHAT JOSE RIVEIRO EXPECTS NEXT SEASON
Riveiro further believes his side are capable of going all out next season and challenge for all the trophies they will be participating in especially the CAF Champions League.
“We are very competitive people and everything we do is to try for the opportunity to win trophies.
“We have the resources and players to make it possible so in a way it is also a relief. To have the opportunity to go the Champions League with Pirates and to see them progress is great,” he added.
