Maema reflects on successful season with Sundowns
Mamelodi Sundowns attacking midfielder Neo Maema has reflected on his exploits for the Tshwane giants this past season, a campaign he believes was a success.
The 27-year-old joined Sundowns in July 2021 from Bloemfontein Celtic, prior to the club selling their top flight status to Royal AM and relocating to KwaZulu-Natal.
In his first season for Downs, Maema did relatively well as he finished the campaign with four goals and seven assists in 36 appearances in all competitions.
NEO MAEMA ENJOYS BEST SEASON
This past season, though, which was his second at the club, was his best as he improved his numbers to finish with seven goals and five assists.
And even if one ignores the numbers, Maema’s impact at Mamelodi Sundowns this season has been evident for all to see.
And this is the reason why he’s been one of coach Rulani Mokwena’s most trusted soldiers throughout the campaign.
“It was a very difficult season, I embraced all the good things that happened. It was a better season unlike my first season when I joined the club,” said Maema.
“We did very well as a team, we lost fewer games and broke a lot of records.”
Maema, however, is the first one to admit that he is far from being the finished product, adding there are plenty areas of improvement in his game.
“Regarding the difficulties I faced this season, I’d say its more about adapting quicker into the games like the CAF Champions League, the cup games, and how fast the games were coming up,” added Maema.
“I would like to adapt quicker and make sure that I play to the best of my abilities to help the team move forward. Those are the types of things I want to change from this season. Hopefully next season I will be better.”
MORE ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT
Nevertheless, Maema is encouraged by the progress he has made since moving to Chloorkop and believes he can only get better next season.
“My goals for next season are to put more goals in the back of the net. I still need to watch my games and make sure I get those stats up, those goals and assists, to help the team.”
