CT Spurs halfway through to returning to the DStv Prem

Motsepe Foundation Championship side Cape Town Spurs are halfway through to returning to the DStv Premiership.

The Capetonians defeated Casric Stars FC 1-0 on Wednesday 7 June at Athlone Stadium.

Spurs were relegated from the South African topflight back in 2017/18 season.

The narrow win saw the hosts maintain their spot at the summit of the standings. The have nine points from three matches.

On the other hand, for Casric it’s back to the drawing board as their dream of playing topflight football next season crashed. Stars have accumulated zero points in three outings.

In the reverse fixture, Cape Town Spurs were victorious winning 1-0 victory thanks to Ashley Cupido strike.

GOALESS FIRST HALF

The teams went on the break deadlocked at 0-0 as either side couldn’t take their chances and find the back on the net.

Despite, lack of goals in the first half, it was one way traffic for the hosts. They were dominating every aspect on the field.

They had an average ball possession of 63 per cent as compared to 37 of Casric. In terms of shots on target, the visitors failed to register a single shot whilst the Cape Town outfit had two.

At the start of the second half, the Urban Warriors made a double substitution. They brought in fresh legs the duo of Luvuyo Phewa and Asenele Velebayi. The two players replaced veteran midfielder Michael Morton and Chumani Butsaka.

CAPE TOWN SPURS REDUCED TO 10-MAN

The Warriors finished the game a man short after Cupido received a straight red card in the 65th minute.

Moments later, Morne Nel opened the scoring in the 72nd minute to hand the home side a lead. The scoreline remained unchanged for the remainder of the match.

Spurs therefore, only need a point to return to the DStv Premiership with one match left to play.

Shaun Bartlett’s charges will take on Maritzburg United on 14 June a side they defeated 1-0 in the reverse tie. The Blue Army have amassed three points with two matches left to play.
