Why Hugo Broos snubbed Khanyisa Mayo for Morocco tie
Bafana Bafana mentor Hugo Broos has explained why he snubbed striker Khanyisa Mayo for their last Group K AFCON qualifiers against Morocco.
The two sides renew rivalry on Saturday 17 June at FNB Stadium with kickoff scheduled for 5pm.
Mayo had a great season with his club Cape Town City FC. He finished as the joint DStv Premiership top scorer alongside Mamelodi Sundowns ace Peter shalulile with 12 goals respectively.
The 24-year-old’s good form in front of goal developed rumours linking him with a move away from the Citizens. He ended the talk by signing a long term contract which will see him at the club till June 2028.
WHY HUGO BROOS SNUBBED KHANYISA MAYO
According to the Belgian mentor, leaving out Mayo was a tough call, but at the end of the day he had to select only 23 players.
“You have to make decisions and you have to make choices, sometimes the choices are difficult also for me,” said Broos.
“Should I take Mayo, should I take [Monnapule] Saleng or should I take another striker? You take a little bit of opportunity on what can he or what can he cannot or what can the other one do.
“At the end it was Mayo we didn’t choose. Sometimes you can’t explain why you really choose that player or why you don’t choose that player.”
HUGO BROOS’ ADMISSION ON KHANYISA MAYO
Broos admitted that Mayo deserved to be with the team based on the form he had towards the end of the 2022/23 season.
“His end of the season was good, he started scoring again with his team but it has nothing to do with that he didn’t show enough in the pre-camp. He deserved to be with us, I can only select 23 players,” he added.
