Swallows boss on how Nyatama earned his trust

Swallows FC chairman David Mogashoa has opened up on what made him trust Musa Nyatama with the Dube Birds’ dugout.

Nyatama suddenly turned into a coach at the beginning of the season, assisting Dylan Kerr who was later sacked in September after a poor start to the season.

Thereafter, the former midfielder led the side on an interim basis before Ernst Middendorp replaced Kerr. However, the German tactician also left after resigning when he was offered a job by SV Meppen.

Nyatama has been mentoring the Soweto outfit since then. He helped them avoid relegation, ending the season with four consecutive wins.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with FARPost, Mogashoa said he took note of Nyatama’s leadership skills when the 35-year-old was still playing.

He believes they won the 2022/23 PSL Promotional Playoffs thanks to Nyatama’s leadership in the dressing room. He also feels the former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder proved himself whenever he led Swallows as a caretaker coach.

Few weeks ago, Mogashoa confirmed that the club has appointed the 35-year-old as the permanent head coach.

“That trust actually comes from last season when he was still playing,” said Mogashwa.

“He showed his leadership skills on the field. And then going into the playoffs also he showed good leadership skills.

“He’s the reason why we won the playoffs because he was leading players from the dressing room. He also worked with Dylan Kerr as an assistant coach, that experience I think also worked for him.

“Because when coach Dylan Kerr left, he took over and there were positive signs there. We brought it in coach Ernst Middendorp, he worked with him.

“And when coach Middendorp left, he was the right person to take over. So, I’ve always believed in coach Musa.

“And it’s also good to give the young coaches a chance because if you don’t give them a chance, no one else will give them a chance.

“So, it’s a good thing that he played for Swallows and he’s getting his coaching career experience at Swallows because we believe that he will go far.”

Meanwhile, Morgan Mammila who was assisting Nyatama has left the club as he rejoined Chippa United as a head coach.

Swallows will appoint the assistant coach ahead of the 2023/24 season.
