Ronwen Williams on Percy Tau: ‘We are very proud of him’
Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams believes teammate Percy Tau’s success in the CAF Champions League with Al Ahly bodes well for the national team.
Tau recently made history as he became the first South African player to win the premier club continental competition twice – with Mamelodi Sundowns in 2016 and Ahly this year.
The former Brighton and Hove Albion forward was one of the key players for Ahly this season. The African football giants bagged a record 11th Champions League title.
Ahly defeated defending champions Wydad Casablanca 3-2 on aggregate in the final with Tau finding the back of the net in the first leg in Cairo.
RONWEN WILLIAMS HAPPY FOR PERCY TAU
The Lion of Judah, as Tau is affectionately known, finished the competition with impressive figures of five goals and just as many assists in 12 matches.
With a combined total of ten goal contributions throughout the tournament, the former Sundowns star raised his hand for the potential player of the tournament award.
Williams, who fell short in the competition with Sundowns as they were eliminated in the semi-finals by the losing finalists Wydad, is happy that Tau got over the line.
“We are very happy to see Percy doing well. We obviously missed him [at Bafana] when he was going through his injury issues,” said Williams.
“And we are just happy to have a fully fit Percy Tau. Because on his day he is a game-changer and a match-winner.
“So, we are happy for him. We congratulated him and are very proud of him. Hopefully, he can come this week and have a brilliant game for us.”
Williams insists Tau’s experience on the continent will come in handy for Bafana. This is when they face North African giants Morocco in their upcoming CAF AFCON qualifier.
Tau, who is still in a celebratory mood, is expected to join up with Hugo Broos’ Bafana squad this week. SA are in camp ahead of their clash with the Atlas Lions.
TAU’S EXPERIENCE KEY FOR BAFANA
The match is scheduled to take place on Saturday at the FNB Stadium with kick off at 17:00.
“Playing at that level is highly important. Because you get to experience the tactics they use and there’s a lot that come with playing in Africa,” added Williams.
“It’s not just the game itself but theres a lot that happens off the felid, the traveling, the atmosphere. They try to make it very tough for you.”
