Coach Thulani Nkosi drops hint about his future at Upington City 

Coach Thulani Nkosi has dropped a hint about his future as Upington City coach following the club’s promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship. 

Upington from the Northern Cape were officially crowned the SAFA ABC Motsepe National playoffs Champions winners on Sunday, 11 June 2023 after defeating North West’s Orbit College 3-1 in the final. 

The just-ended national playoffs were in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. 

Goals from Wille Nel, Dellmico Malgas, and Malakia Sefoli were enough to secure the Northern Cape side a victory that saw them walk away with the R1 250 000 first prize money.

‘Bafana Ba Gucci’, as they are popularly known within the football circles, will now compete in the South African football second tier next season.

When Nkosi was asked about his future at the club, the coach stated that he doesn’t know where he is standing. He went on to say his contract just expired after the conclusion of the playoffs. 

THULANI NKOSI: ‘IT’S DIFFICULT TO SAY RIGHT NOW’ 

“Look, it’s difficult to say right now. I need to have a break because I can’t even think properly,” said Nkosi. 

“Obviously, we will go and plan. But firstly, I have to sit with the technical director. 

“As things stand, I don’t know where I’m standing because my contract just expired now.”

WHAT COACH NKOSI TOLD HIS PLAYERS BEFORE THE PLAYOFFS 

“I said to the boys when we started to prepare for the playoffs that it’s good that we are coming from the farms. This is because nobody is going to say anything good about us” he added. 

“Then we have to take it upon ourselves and prove ourselves that we are capable to win the playoffs. 

“Look, I believe in these young boys from the same Upington. I can tell you that 90% who won this, those are Upington players and I’m very proud.”
