Kaizer Chiefs announce surprise departure

Kaizer Chiefs have announced yet another departure ahead of the new PSL season with the latest one coming as a big surprise.

On Thursday, 15 June 2023, Amakhosi confirmed that Siyabonga Ngezana has left the club to seek greener pastures overseas.

Ngezana has penned a deal with Romanian side Fotbal Club FCSB for an undisclosed fee. He leaves Amakhosi after seven seasons.

The defender had a memorable debut as he scored against Mamelodi Sundowns in 2017 and went on to make 123 appearances in Chiefs colours. In the just-ended campaign, Ngezana was in and out of the team due to below-par performances as he featured in 23 matches.

Ngezana’s most significant season came in 2020/21 as he featured regularly, helping Chiefs reach the CAF Champions League final.

At international level, the Vaal-triangle-born star formed part of the 2018 Bafana Bafana squad at the COSAFA Cup. He also represented SA at junior level including the Under-23s.

Kaizer Chiefs say goodbye to Siyabonga Ngezana

“We wish Siya all the best in Romania. May he fly the South African and Kaizer Chiefs flags high in Europe,” reads the Chiefs statement.

Ngezana is the second Chiefs player to head out the exit door following the conclusion of the DStv Premiership 2022/23 season. The club recently bid farewell to veteran defender Erick Mathoho.

In addition, the 25-year-old is the second Amakhosi academy graduate to seal a European move as Njabulo Blom joined Major League Soccer [MLS] outfit St. Louis City SC in the USA six months ago.

Ngezana’s new team; FCSB is set to play in the UEFA Conference League in the 2023/24 campaign.

The Romanian giants have won the league title 26 times with 22 Romanian Cups, six Romanian Super Cups, two League Cups, one UEFA Champions League trophy, and one UEFA Super Cup.

Meanwhile, Chiefs are set to welcome two new defenders in Thatayaone Ditlhokwe from SuperSport United and Given Msimango from TS Galaxy.
