‘I enjoy the avocados’: Bartlett clarifies ‘Venda’ remarks

Cape Town Spurs coach Shaun Bartlett has taken steps to clarify his recent remarks about Venda after fierce backlash from Black Leopards director Chief Thidiela.

A video, which was posted on social media on Thursday, 14 June showed Bartlett saying “I’ve got no more trips to Venda. Hopefully no DStv Premiership in Venda. We can play in good stadiums now. I think that, for me, is the reward for these players.”

Shaun Bartlett was evidently emotional during his post-match engagements as his troops gained promotion to the DStv Premiership after winning the PSL promotional/relegation playoffs.

Many felt excitement got the better of Bartlett as his men beat Maritzburg United and Casric Stars in the race for a spot in the Premiership.

CT Spurs concluded the mini-league with 10 points following their goalless draw against the Team of Choice in their last clash on Wednesday at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

Chief Thidiela like many in the northern part of South Africa were offended by Bartlett’s comments.

Leopards director even went as far as labelling Bartlett’s statement about Venda as reckless and geographic discrimination.

“It might not necessarily be xenophobic but there is some sort of segregation or discrimination,” said Thidiela. “A professional person can’t say that. “They are crying about one or two trips. But do they ever think about VFA, TTM, and Leopards traveling the long distance to go and play away?

Bartlett clarifies ‘ANTI-VENDA’ STATEMENT

In an attempt to clarify his comments, the Bafana Bafana legend insinuated that his words were taken out of context.

“I love Venda,” said Bartlett on Radio 2000 after realising that his words rubbed some people up the wrong way.

“I’ve only lost twice in 15 [games] there. Why would I not like it? I also enjoy the avocados, especially the price.

“My comments were based on traveling. We fly to Joburg, then drive for five to six hours. It’s taxing on everyone and it was said in jest [joke],” he added.
