Cape Town Spurs tie down midfielder with new deal

Cape Town Spurs have moved swiftly to tie down one of their midfielders with a new deal ahead of the 2023/24 season.

CT Spurs gained promotion to the DStv Premiership after overpowering Maritzburg United and Casric Stars in the PSL Promotion/Relegation playoffs.

The Cape Town-based outfit finished second on the Motsepe Foundation Championship table behind Polokwane City who gained automatic promotion the elite league.

In the just-ended Championship season, CT Spurs won 17 games, drawing six, and lost on seven occasions after 30 games.

The Urban Warriors are keen to keep the core of their squad that helped the team seal the promotion back to the Premiership.

This publication understands that Leo Thethani will be offered a new deal for the upcoming season.

Thethani joined Spurs at the start of the 2022/23 season and featured in 10 games while scoring one goal. He returned to professional football after taking a two-year break.

“Leo Thethani will sign a new deal with Cape Town Spurs,” a source close to the player told FARPost.

“When Thethani joined Spurs, it was all about helping the team gain promotion to the PSL. Now that the club has managed to gain promotion, he’ll stay with the club.

“The deal that is offered to Thethani is a one-year contract and I don’t think anything could hinder that,”

Meanwhile, the Shaun Bartlett-coached club confirmed they will hold on to the senior players whom their experience will come in handy in the top flight.

Clayton Daniels, Nazeer Allie and Michael Morton are the experienced campaigners who’ll remain with club for the new season.

Furthermore, Spurs chairman Ari Efstathiou has reiterated that the in-demand Ashley Cupido is not for sale.
