Sundowns in pole position to sign Thapelo Maseko
Mamelodi Sundowns are in pole position to sign SuperSport United starlet Thapelo Maseko ahead of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season.
Maseko has been one of the exciting youngsters in the league since he was promoted from the DStv Diski Challenge by SuperSport.
The 19-year-old featured in 24 matches for Matsatsantsa in the league and scored four goals while contributing two assists.
Maseko was handed his maiden Bafana Bafana call-up in June 2023 by head coach Hugo Broos to participate in the AFCON qualifiers. Bafana qualified for the AFCON showpiece set to be staged in Ivory Coast in January 2024.
He also played a key role in helping SuperSport finish third on the log to qualify for CAF Confederation Cup.
Meanwhile, SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews recently confirmed the European interest in the young Maseko. Belgian outfit Westerlo tabled an offer for Maseko which was rejected by SuperSport.
This publication understands that Sundowns have offered SuperSport an offer that is hard to resist for the signature of Maseko.
Sundowns have already concluded the signing of Junior Mendieta from Stellenbosch FC and have an agreement in place to sign Marumo Gallants’ attacking midfielder Lesiba Nku.
With Maseko being on the wishlist of several clubs, indications are that the Chloorkop-based side is leading the race to sign the winger.
