Sundowns legend throws challenge at Chiefs and Pirates

Mamelodi Sundowns legend Roger Feutmba has laid down a challenge to Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs ahead of the new PSL season.

The Tshwane giants have made history by winning a sixth straight DStv Premiership title with their rivals Pirates and Chiefs nowhere closer to them.

Last season, Mamelodi Sundowns lifted their 13th Premiership title with 70 points while Pirates was in second place, a significant 16 points adrift of the winners. Chiefs finished in fifth spot with 44 points.

Pirates, at least under the Spaniard mentor Jose Riveiro managed to win two domestic cups – the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup. However, Pirates’ league standard to Sundowns is still far behind.

As for AmaKhosi, their performance was poor throughout the campaign and their fans are now calling for their inexperienced head coach Arthur Zwane to be fired before the start of the 2023/24 season. The club extended its trophy drought to eight years, failing to qualify for the CAF inter-club competition.

Pirates and Chiefs need to have strong squads capable of ending Sundowns’ dominance in the DStv Premiership or else the league will start boring to the football fans.

Ironically, this is the appealing to two Soweto giants by Sundowns legend Roger Feutmba.

“I am a Sundowns fan and I want them to do well,” said the 54-year-old former Sundowns midfielder who used to be known as the ‘The General’.

“But it is time Chiefs and Pirates have strong teams that will make things difficult for Sundowns next season for the benefit of football generally. If Sundowns continue to dominate in the Premiership race people will start to lose interest in watching football or going to the stadium.

“We know that Sundowns always play good football but Chiefs and Pirates should also come to the party. We want an interesting competitive league.

“Fans don’t want a league in which we all know that Sundowns will win it again. Even during our time, we knew that we can win the league, but Chiefs and Pirates were not going to make things easier for us.

“It was interesting and people will come to stadiums or watch on TV. We don’t want a boring league which only one team dominate each and very season without a competition.”

The Douala-born legend lifted two Premiership titles and many domestic cups with Downs during his four years stay with the 2016 CAF Champions League champions.
