What’s next for Mhango and Mobara? New AmaZulu coach to make decision

Gabadinho Mhango and Abbubaker Mobara are experienced players at AmaZulu FC, but their futures at the Durban club are still being determined.

Mhango has only been at AmaZulu for a season after his switch from Orlando Pirates last year around this time. The Malawian scored four goals in 16 games in the DStv Premiership. His other two goals came in MTN8 and Nedbank Cup, taking his tally to six in 22 games.

Mobara, on the other hand, joined Usuthu in January 2021, reuniting with then-coach Benni McCarthy, who is now at Manchester United. The two had previously worked together at Cape Town City.

The 29-year-old defender featured 26 times for AmaZulu in all competitions in the 2022/23 season and may not struggle to find suitors should he be released.

According to a source close to the club, management intends to offload the two but will wait for the arrival of the coach.

The duo is still contracted to the club but is yet to decide on whether to keep them. AmaZulu have a new man in charge – Spaniard Pablo Franco Martin – who takes over as head coach. Martin resumes his duties at the Durban side on July 1, 2023, with pre-season preparations next week.

The club could reconsider its position should Martin indicate he wants to keep the two veterans.

“The new coach is obviously assessing the squad and is expected to make recommendations. But management has been clear that the two are not needed. Their only salvation will be if the coach says he needs them,” a club source told FARPost.

The future of Gabadinho Mhango and Mobara at AmaZulu will be decided in the coming weeks. Martin will need to decide whether to keep them, and their futures at the club will depend on his plans for the team.
