Terrence Mashego reflects on first season with Sundowns
Mamelodi Sundowns defender Terrence Mashego has reflected on his first season at the club, sharing the highs and lows he experienced at Chloorkop.
Mashego joined Sundowns on a long-term deal at the start of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season from Cape Town City.
The left-footed wing back came to Masandawana as one of the in-form left backs in the league. Upon his arrival at Chloorkop, Mashego got injuries that kept him out for the larger part of last season.
Sundowns continued their dominance in the league after clinching their sixth successive league title. However they missed out on the CAF Champions League honours as they were eliminated in the semi-finals by Wydad Casablanca.
TERRENCE MASHEGO LOST HIS PLACE IN THE BAFANA BAFANA SQUAD
Mashego, who lost his position in the Bafana Bafana squad since he joined Sundowns in September 2022 has explained why this was the most challenging season since he became a professional player.
“It was a challenging season for me because throughout the season I only played about five games,” Mashego said.
“If I were to include the CAF Champions League it would be seven games. This has never happened before.
“Since I started my football career in the first division I’ve been playing consistently, playing about thirty games in a season and that’s why for me it was a difficult season. I am used to scoring goals and getting assists, but then this season I don’t have a goal or an assist.
Mashego further shed some light on what he has been doing to improve on the disappointment of last season.
“Since the last CAF game I’ve been doing my own individual training on the side, I was out for quite some time and now I am back.
“I don’t see the reason for me to rest because I just need to work more on my fitness, focus on myself. Then I know when the new season resumes then I’m on the same level as the guys. I just want to play more games.
“So I’m hoping to achieve more with the team and take part in helping the team win the league and the Championship,”
