Chipolopolo International Kabwe opens up on Sekhukhune departure

Zambia international Rodrick Kabwe has opened up about his sudden departure from DStv Premiership side Sekhukhune United.

Babina Noko returned for pre-season this week with Kabwe one of the notable absentees. The 31-year-old featured 19 times in all competitions for the Sekhukhune side that reached the final of the Nedbank Cup and subsequently qualified for the CAF Confederations Cup. They also secured their first-ever top-eight finish in the premiership.

It appears Sekhukhune opted not to exercise the one-year option to retain his services for the upcoming season.

Kabwe was part of the Zambia national team side that beat Ivory Coast to qualify for the 2023 Afcon. The former Ajax Cape Town player confirmed to FARPost that he was no longer part of Sekhukhune.

“Sometimes these things happen in football so I won’t say it came as a surprise,” he said. “As a football player, you must be ready for any eventuality.”

EYES ON THE 2023 AFCON TOURNAMENT

Kabwe tells this publication that he doesn’t rule out the possibility of playing in his native Zambia or continuing in South Africa.

“If the opportunity presents itself then why not?” asked Kabwe who is still in Zambia. “I have been playing in the PSL for a long time so for me that’s not something to stress about.”

“Playing in Zambia is also the same. I am playing at the highest level at the moment with the national team. In six months’ time, we have the Afcon which we qualified with Zambia after so many years of being absent.

“I don’t want to be left out. So that’s why I want to play, it doesn’t matter where the opportunity will present itself for me to be okay. All I need is to be active, play my football and be ready for the Afcon,” he said.
