Farouk Khan on what qualities Patrick Maswanganyi brings to Pirates

Former Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Farouk Khan has explained what qualities newly signed Patrick Maswanganyi brings to Orlando Pirates.

Pirates announced the signing of Maswanganyi alongside Katlego Otladisa, Melusi Buthelezi and Sephelo Baloni.

Maswanganyi was a surprise acquisition by the Buccaneers after he was reportedly on Mamelodi Sundowns’ radar.

In the 2022/23 DStv Premiership campaign, the left-footed attacker made 22 appearances for SuperSport United and contributed four assists. He played a key role in helping SuperSport finish third on the league table to qualify for CAF Confederations Cup.

The highly-rated midfielder came through the Stars Of Africa Football Academy, and Farouk has detailed what qualities Maswanganyi brings to the Soweto giants.

“Look, Patrick Maswanganyi is one of the players who are highly gifted technically,” Farouk told FARPost.

“He has a very educated left foot, and I always say that left-footed players are very special because they are hard to find.

“So he’s a player who can dribble his way into the box and, as a defender, if you come flying at him, he can embarrass you. He’s going to be very key for Pirates.

“Maswanganyi is joining one of the Stars Of Africa graduates at Pirates in Kabelo Dlamini and I think they play a little bit similar.

“The only difference is that Maswanganyi can be effective both in defence and attack whereas Dlamini is still lacking in defence.

“I mean what also make Maswanganyi special is that he has goals in him, he has assists in him and he’s a team player. I believe that Pirates made a great signing,”

Meanwhile, the Jose Riveiro-coached team had an impressive showing in the 2022/23 season after winning MTN8 and Nedbank Cup. They also finished second on the log to qualify for CAF Champions League.

Furthermore, Pirates parted company with Nkanyiso Zungu, Kopano Thuntsane, Ndumiso Mabena and Graig Martin, who has since joined Chippa United.
