Former Sundowns ace in Chinese league golden boot race

A former Mamelodi Sundowns ace continues to carve a niche in the Chinese Super League as he is in another intriguing golden boot race.

The centre-forward moved to second position on the Chinese Super League goal charts after notching home a brace on Wednesday.

At 35, the former Mamelodi Sundowns ace Nyasha Mushekwi is ageing like fine wine with his unstoppable scoring instincts.

The former Caps United FC star was on target in Zhejiang FC’s 3-0 home win over Meizhou Hakka, to take his tally to eight goals this season.

The brace was his second of the season after netting another one in their 2-2 draw with QD Hainiu in May.

Jean Evrard Kouassi scored the other goal to round off their emphatic win.

The win helped the team move to seventh position after 13 games with 18 points. They trail behind log leaders Shanghai Port by 11 points.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns ace is on song in the Chinese Super League, where he has scored in four successive games.

As a result, of the impressive exploits, Mushekwi is now two goals behind leading marksman Leo Souza.

The Changchun Yatai striker, Leo Souza, has managed an impressive ten goals in 13 Chinese Super League matches.

Nevertheless, Mushekwi has been in Zheijang FC’s books since 2019 when he joined as a free agent from DL Yifang.

He is hoping to replicate the scintillating form that saw him cap off a memorable 2021 season in China.

In that season, he clinched the coveted Golden Boot in the second-tier Chinese League One, with an incredible tally of 24 goals.

He became the second Zimbabwean to win the coveted Chinese League One Golden Boot award.

Ex-Orlando Pirates forward Gilbert Mushangazhike won the same award in 2007 during his time at Jiangsu Shuntien.

The former Zimbabwe Warriors centre-forward has lived up to his billing in the 107 games he played.

Until today, the revered striker, who turns 36 in August, scored 61 goals and provided six assists.

For Mamelodi Sundowns, he scored 30 goals in 92 matches played and remains one of the best Zimbabwean strikers that graced the team.
