NB La Masia taps Cavin Johnson for technical advice

Motsepe Foundation Championship NB La Masia is tapping former Al Ahly assistant coach Cavin Johnson for technical advice ahead of the 2023/24 season.

Johnson will not be taking on a full-time role at the club but will instead be providing his expertise.

The 64-year-old coach is a highly respected figure in South African football and was Pitso Mosimane’s assistant at Al Ahly.

The Egypt stint came on the back of coaching jobs with Platinum Stars, SuperSport United, AmaZulu FC and Black Leopards.

CAVIN JOHNSON PROVIDING TECHNICAL ADVICE

As La Masia prepares for the new season, Johnson is providing technical advice to the club’s coaches and players.

La Masia recently parted ways with Ashwin Sutton, who has since been announced as Casric Stars’ head coach. Delano Hendricks remains the caretaker coach at La Masia.

The club’s chairman, Nazeer Baker, said that Johnson had been gracious enough to assist them in preparing for the new season.

“He is a highly experienced coach with a proven track record of getting the best out of young players. We have a relatively young squad and are grateful that they get to learn from him as we prepare for our second season in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. So he’s guiding us on how to go about our preparations for the new season and how to approach the 2023/24 season,” Baker told FARPost.

In a separate interview with FARPost, Johnson said nothing positive had come out of the offers he has received since returning from Egypt in September 2021.

“It’s always questions, always enquiries, but nothing comes back and say we’re ready to cut the deal, we’re ready to make something happen.

IT’S VERY SURPRISING

“It’s very surprising to me, but we will wait. In the meantime, you try and help where you didn’t help before when you had the job. Like for example, you’re going out helping younger coaches, explaining to them what football is all about,” he told FARPost.

He is also doing a lot of research that he feels he will need in future. Meanwhile, La Masia will be looking for an improved showing in the 2023/24 season. They finished 13th in their maiden season, and

“We’d love to go all out and challenge for honours. It’s the second year, and we’d love to challenge,” Baker said.
