Daniel Akpeyi sets retirement goals

Swallows FC goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has revealed what he intends to achieve before retiring from playing football.

Akpeyi joined the Dube Birds towards the end of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season on a short-term deal and made an immediate impact.

He played eight matches, kept five cleansheets and conceded five goals.

He was a free agent for almost a season after parting ways with Kaizer Chiefs. Before heading to Swallows, he was heavily linked to ambitious Sekhukhune United and Stellenbosch FC however the deals fell through.

This publication has learnt that the 36-year-old penned a new deal with the Birds ahead of the 2023/24 campaign which will keep him much longer at the club.

WHAT DANIEL AKPEYI INTENDS TO ACHIEVE BEFORE RETIRING FROM PLAYING FOOTBALL

According to the Nigerian international shot-stopper, he intends to win the league before calling it time in playing football in the South African top-flight.

He once came close to winning it with Kaizer Chiefs back in 2019/20 season, however they were unfortunate as they lost the title on the last day to Tshwane giants Mamelodi Sundowns.

“I still believe I still want to win the league,. I’m looking for that opportunity to be in a team where everybody’s dream is to win the league not just to compete,” Akpeyi told FARPost.

“My plans are open, I opt to be in an environment where there is competition. I still hope that the mindset is to compete for the new season.

“Swallows FC was not on my mind, I wasn’t thinking that it’s a club I will go to.

“I needed an environment where I can play and get back to the game before anything comes up. It wasn’t a plan.
