‘I respect Dr Kaizer Motaung but…’

Dr Kaizer Motaung is certainly not immune to criticism, but it is rare for former players to direct their dissatisfaction with the club’s state of affairs straight to the man known as ‘Chincha Guluva’.

Kaizer Chiefs, once known as the ‘Cup Kings’ of SA football, have been in a state of decline for eight years, having not won a trophy since 2015.

At some stage, fans organised a march to the Amakhosi Village in Naturena, insisting that they are fed up with being a laughing stock of SA football while falling far behind their rivals, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.

In addition, Chiefs’ faithful have resorted to violence in recent years to express their frustration. If the club’s fans were not throwing objects at the players and coaches, they would go on the rampage, hurling insults.

Former Chiefs stars have also been critical of Amakhosi’s management, with Junior Khanye firing a salvo at Dr Motaung.

Khanye stated that Dr Motaung and his family have lost the drive and ambition to win trophies.

The ex-dribbling wizard conceded that Chiefs lost direction back in 2005, and claimed that the appointment of Molefi Ntseki as the head coach is a step further in the wrong direction.

Junior Khanye fires salvo at Dr Kaizer Motaung

“I respect Bra K [Dr Kaizer Motaung] a lot; he has built a great village in Naturena and a very professional club,” Khanye told FARPost.

“But the advertisement of football that the club is displaying is a disaster. The structure itself is damaged. So, it looks like the club doesn’t have the drive and hunger to succeed, to win something.

“And again, Chiefs lost direction a long time ago, since the 2005/06 season after the departure of the late Ted Dumitru, winning two league titles in style. I was part of that team, with skilful players such as myself, Jabu Mahlangu and Thabiso Malatsi.

“He [Dumitru] left and Chiefs also released assistant coach Farouk Khan, that’s where the decline started.”

Khanye also indicated that the coaching changes over the last decade have contributed to Chiefs’ downward spiral.

The coaches that were roped in and failed to end the trophy drought, include Stuart Baxter, Steve Komphela, Giovanni Solinas, Ernst Middendorp, Gavin Hunt, and Arthur Zwane.

Ntseki is the new man at the helm. The Amakhosi management is convinced that the ex-Bafana Bafana coach can bring back the glory days at the club.

“The coaches that came after Dumitru messed up the club’s culture and lost its playing style,” added Khanye.

“Chiefs lost its direction over the years and started to sign the wrong players and used the wrong philosophy. I mean, Solinas, what did he achieve for him to coach Chiefs?

“Fast forward to 2023, the club appoints Molefi Ntseki and makes Zwane his assistant coach. There is no experience in the technical team. This shows that the club has to desire to win trophies.”
