Sundowns goalies pay tribute to Mweene after retirement
Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeepers have led the way showering the just retired Kennedy Mweene with praises after announcing his retirement.
Mweene had a colourful club career with Bafana Ba Style, which lasted a decade from [from 2013 to 2023] before deciding to call it time.
Ahead of the 2023/24 PSL campaign, the goalkeeper nicknamed ‘Kaapalaya’ is the latest addition to the technical team, as he will be assisting in the goalkeeping department.
Last season, the 38-year-old served as a goalkeeper coach in a league match against Orlando Pirates when coach Wendell Robinson was suspended.
Just before he announced on Monday 10 July, the team’s mentor Rulani Mokwena uploaded a picture on his Twitter account sitting with his technical team, and Mweene was part of it.

“He’s a fun individual, an honest guy and a good teammate to have. He’s been a good role model and motivation for myself and the young ones coming in,” said Reyaad Pieterse.
“Kennedy has made tremendous saves that have kept us in many competitions. To learn from someone like that is such an honour and privilege, he’s world-class.”
Skipper Denis Onyango said: “Happy face when we are at training, he gives 100 per cent when we were given a task. He’s the only goalkeeper in the PSL that have won all the titles and in Africa.”
Masandawana goalkeeper coach Robinson who will be working alongside Mweene ahead of the 2023/24 season also had this to say: “He’s professional, he’s hardworking. Most of all, he’s one of the most humble and kind human beings, you will ever find.”

Mweene’s former teammate Sibusiso Vilakazi couldn’t hold back as he also paid his tribute to the great shot-stopper: “Incredible King Kenny!!! One of the most decorated players. Trophies!!! All the best Kapayala”
Mweene and Masandawana are currently in pre-season camp in Rustenburg as they continue with their preparations before flying to the Netherlands for pre-season.
