Ex-Sundowns defender launches football academy to nurture young talent
Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Luvhengo Mungomeni has officially launched the Uprising Soccer football academy.
Mungomeni recently parted ways with PSL club Venda FC. He served as a head scout as well as an assistant coach at some point. The club opted not to renew his contract ahead of the new season.
EX MAMELODI SUNDOWNS DEFENDER SET UP AN ACADEMY
The 38-year-old has confirmed to FARPost that a new football academy has been established and will be based in Limpopo.
“We want the academy to cater to all our kids in our area which is obviously Limpopo,”
“Then it comes back to Vhembe where I come from. So I think the whole idea is to be able to groom kids from an early age. To know the basics of football and how football is played. I have done research for years checking out why we don’t have enough kids in our professional ranks or why our kids can make it far.”

The academy is set to host trials on Saturday, 29 July 2023 at Rabali Ground, Nzhelele in Limpopo. This is for the under 12, 14, 17 and 19. They are required to bring in an ID document and a training kit.
Mungomeni says his new project doesn’t necessarily mean he is lost to professional football for good.
“The response from many people is good and encouraging. But that doesn’t mean I won’t work for professional teams. Remember I have my grassroots SAFA D license coaching qualifications that has motivated me to pursue a C license.
“If an opportunity comes and it’s bigger than what I am doing, I will consider it. There are people that are also going to be employed by the academy. But if it’s not bigger than what I am doing, honestly I won’t take it,” he said.
Mungomeni was part of the VFA side since their formation two years ago.
