Who are Steve Komphela’s core players at Swallows
Moroka Swallows under the guidance of Steve Komphela promises to be one of the teams to look out for in the 2023/24 PSL season.
The Soweto side has already stated its mandate for the season. They want to make the club a giant in the league again.
To start the process, they have gone back to their original name ‘Moroka Swallows’ and they have started bolstering their squad.
FARPost writer Otis Ntshangase looks at Steve Komphela’s core players at the club.
ANDILE JALI
The former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns midfield maestro has reunited with Steve Komphela at the club. Before joining Swallows, he almost joined Stellenbosch FC, Cape Town City FC and Pirates.
The former Bafana Bafana international brings much experience to the Dube Birds midfield. He has won many titles, played overseas and in the CAF Champions League.
DANIEL AKPEYI
The former Kaizer Chiefs shot-stopper has been a key player for the Soweto side after joining them in the second half of the 2022/23 campaign. Upon his arrival at Dobsonville Stadium, Akpeyi was entrusted in between the sticks by coach Musa Nyatama.
So far, the Nigerian international has made eight appearances for Ama Swai Swai. He’s been in great form only conceding five goals and keeping five clean sheets.
KEEGAN ALLAN
The 22-year-old has been a key player for Swallows after making a switch from University of Pretoria in 2022/23 season.
For Swallows, Allan has been great at the back. Despite injury setbacks, last season he played 20 matches in all competitions. He helped the team keep eight clean sheets scoring two goals and providing an assist in the process.
LANTSHENE PHALANE
The versatile midfield engine will be one of Swallows’ big players ahead of the 2023/24 season.
The 33-year-old at his peak joined the club after the conclusion of the 2022/23 season from KZN side Royal AM. For Thwihli Thwahla, he made 178 appearances in all competitions. He managed to find the back of the net five times and provided nine clean sheets.
KAGISO MALINGA
The 28-year-old has shown signs of being a good goal scorer if he’s well supported. Last season, Malinga scored six goals helping the team to a top eight finish.
KWANDA MNGONYAMA
The ex-Pirates defender has been consistent since joining the club ahead of the 2022/23 season. Last season, the 29-year-old made 20 appearances in all competitions.
Wandisile Letlabika
The experienced defender has shown over the past season that he’s an expert in defence The 33-year-old made eight appearances last season, in many of the games coming in as a substitute.
