Desiree Ellis determined to defy all odds at the World Cup
Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis has revealed her desire to go all the way and defy all odds at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
Banyana Banyana who will be making their second appearance at the World Cup will be aiming at improving their performances they showcased in France [2019]. The exited the competition in the group stages.
On paper, it appears very difficult for South Africa after they fell in Group G alongside Sweden, Argerntina and Italy. However, on the field it can be a different ball-game altogether.

“We travel to our second successive World Cup with a blend of young and experienced players. Yes, we are eager and positive, even in a tough group where Sweden, Italy and Argentina will all be looking to make bold statements,” said Ellis.
“I’m happy to predict that none of these fixtures will leave our opposition wondering about South Africa’s flair or aptitude for hard work.
“Playing against the best in the world is what every member of Banyana Banyana strives to achieve. This is our chance to make our mark.

The 60-year-old further revealed that they will not be taking anything for granted at the women’s elite football competition. They want to make their presence felt.
“We will be taking nothing for granted. We’ll allow ourselves the opportunity to enjoy the majesty of the occasion in a beautiful part of the world among people who enjoy the game.
“A great adventure awaits and we look forward to representing South Africa with honour and pride. We will dare to be great,” she added.
The World Cup kicks off on 20 July and Banyana’s first match is on 23 July against Sweden.
