Sundowns complete the signing of Thapelo Maseko

Mamelodi Sundowns have announced the signing of Thapelo Maseko from rivals SuperSport United ahead of the 2023/24 season.

The club made an announcement on Tuesday 18 July on their social media pages.

Maseko becomes Masandawana’s fourth signing after the club acquired the services of Lesiba Nku from Marumo Gallants, Junior Mendieta from Stellenbosch FC and Lucas Ribeiro Costa from Belgian side SK Beveren.

A few days ago, this publication reported that Maseko had completed a move to Sundowns and would be announced in due course.

“The wait is over! Welcome to the Yellow Nation, Thapelo Maseko! Masandawana, let’s make our new signing feel at home and show him how it feels to be part of our family!” Sundowns posted.

THAPELO MASEKO’S FIRST WORDS AS A MAMELODI SUNDOWNS PLAYER

“Speed has always been part of my game, in football like everything in life there are distances. With that said we keep going faster, faster because we never leave side of the goal,” said Maseko.

“I am Thapelo Maseko and I’m proud to be here. Areyeng Masandawana!!!”

Before Maseko made way to Chloorkop, reports emerged that SuperSport rejected numerous offers for their star player. This was mainly from Belgian club KV Westerlo who had shown interest in Maseko’s services.

Last season, the 20-year-old had a great spell with Matsatsantsa as they finished third on the DStv Premiership log standings to qualify for CAF Confederation Cup.

The versatile winger played 21 matches in all competitions. He found the back of the net four times and provided two assists.

For his consistent performances on the field of play, he earned his first senior Bafana Bafana call-up for AFCON qualifiers against Morocco by coach Hugo Broos in June 2023.

At Sundowns, Maseko will face stiff competition for a place in the starting line-up. He will be competing with the likes of Lebohang Maboe, Gaston Sirino, Abubeker Nasir and Junior Mendieta
