Maritzburg United complete signing of ex-Pirates defender

Maritzburg United have completed the signing of a former Orlando Pirates defender ahead of their first season in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

The club has begun bolstering its squad for the 2023/24 campaign as they aim to return to the top-flight next season.

The Team of Choice suffered relegation via PSL Promotional Playoffs in June. They joined Marumo Gallants, who were relegated automatically after finishing 16th on the league standings.

The Midlands side has wrapped up the signing of Tshepo Gumede on a one-year deal and an option to extend if the club earns promotion back to the DStv Premiership next season.

This is the first signing for the KwaZulu-Natal side since the July-August transfer window opened. He’ll give the defensive options to coach Zipho Dlangalala after they lost Thabo Moloisane.

Moloisane recently penned a long-term deal with Stellenbosch FC on a free transfer after he left Maritzburg at the end of the season. Meanwhile, the KZN capital-based club might also lose Bonginkosi Makume, who was a regular in their backline.

He missed only six games out of 35 that were played by Maritzburg in all competitions, including the Playoffs.

The 27-year-old centre-back was part of the Bafana Bafana squad that competed in the COSAFA Cup in Durban. Makume has attracted interest from top-flight clubs, including Chippa United.
