Mpho Makola lifts lid on surprise Polokwane City exit
Veteran midfielder Mpho Makola has lifted the lid on his surprise exit from Polokwane City, who are preparing for the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season.
City won the Motsepe Foundation Championship title last season to gain automatic promotion to the Premiership.
The Limpopo-based outfit surprisingly released Makola alongside Joseph Mhlongo despite playing a crucial role in helping the club gain promotion back to SA’s top-flight.
Makola joined Rise and Shine early this year on a short-term contract after he was axed by Cape Town City.
The former Orlando Pirates star has now given details on his abrupt exit from City.
MPHO MAKOLA OPENS UP ON POLOKWANE CITY EXIT
“My time at Polokwane City and my experience with the team was fruitful. I was welcomed by the club with open arms,” Makola said on Metro FM.
“There were only eight games left when I joined Polokwane City. There were a lot of doubts. I needed to wake players up and let them know that promotion is possible.
“Even the coach [Duncan Lechesa] and assistant coach [Phuti Mohafe] came to thank me for the impact I had on the team and changing their mindset on promotion to the DStv Premiership.
“The chairman [Johnny Mogaladi] told me that if I help the club to get promotion to the DStv Premiership, there would be a contract waiting for me to sign with the club.
“I was given the contract as per the promise, but the contract had no figures in it. I said I wouldn’t sign when don’t know how much I will be earning.
“So I was looking forward to being back in the DStv Premiership. I’m not bitter, but I’m just disappointed that the chairman didn’t give me a chance to speak to him.
Meanwhile, Makola revealed that he’s been training alone to keep fit as he weighs his options for the next move.
