Khune, Chivaviro share thoughts on Mahlatse Makudubela’s Yanga move
Kaizer Chiefs stars Itumeleng Khune and Ranga Chivaviro have shared their thoughts on Mahlatsi Makudubela’s move to Tanzanian giants Young Africans.
The 33-year-old joined Young Africans on a one-year deal earlier this week after his contract with Marumo Gallants expired.
He is set to face his former Marumo Gallants teammate Chivaviro on Saturday in an international friendly match.
The tie, set for the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, will mark the Yanga Day celebrations.
Interestingly, Chivaviro was Yanga’s prime target after the CAF Confederation Cup semi-final. The 30-year-old forward opted for Chiefs.
Chivaviro has shared how much he believes his former teammate will enjoy his time at the Jangwani giants.
“It’s gonna be the first time I play against him [on Saturday]. I know the people here will treat him very well. You guys are welcoming, and he will enjoy himself,” said Chivaviro.
KHUNE AND CHIVAVIRO ON MAKUDUBELA
Khune believes the switch could open doors for more South African players to ply their trade in the East African country.
“It’s a good league in Tanzania, and exporting players to this country opens doors to a lot more other youngsters,” said Khune.
“We shouldn’t think that we only play in Europe. Even in the African continent, there are big clubs and teams that are well respected.
“We’re proud to have a South African representing us in the Tanzanian league. He did score against me last season. He’s a great player, great talent. We wish him everything of the best in his future.”
Makudubela is a versatile midfielder who can play in a variety of positions. He is known for his dribbling ability.
“The fans here are saying they don’t expect Skudu to score goals, they just want him to do what he knows best. They want him to entertain them, that’s all,” said Amani Kimweri, who works for Yanga.
‘Skudu’ is expected to be a key player for Young Africans in their quest to retain the Tanzanian Premier League title.
“It’s been a pleasure to represent the yellow and green nation. The welcome has been very warm, I feel very very welcome. Asante sana,” Makudubela said.
“I am so happy and honoured by the faith and trust they have shown in me.”
Makudubela is the first South African player to move to Tanzania. The move to Tanzania is a big opportunity for Makudubela. He will be playing in a new country and in a new league.
