Dondol Stars goalkeeper joins Soweto giants

ABC Mostsepe League side Dondol Stars have announced that goalkeeper Sphamandla Gumede has left the club ahead of the 2023/24 campaign to join one of the PSL giants in Soweto.

The club issued a statement on Monday 24 July to announce the news.

The shot-stopper is well-known for his heroics in the Nedbank Cup in Dondol colours last season. The club became the ‘giant killers’ in the competition eliminating DStv Premiership teams.

For his efforts in between the sticks in the Nedbank, the goalkeeper nicknamed ‘SpiderKid’ has earned a professional contract. He helped Dondol reach the quarter-finals of the competition.

Gumede is the club’s latest player to make a switch from the amateur level to the professional ranks. Other players from Dondol to have secured PSL moves are Francious Baloyi [Polokwane City FC], Tebogo Makungo [University of Pretoria] and Thabang Mnyembane [Sekhukhune United].

In addition, Gumede becomes Pirates’ fifth signing ahead of the new season. In the past few weeks, the Sea Robbers brought in four new faces the quartet Sephelo Baloni [Cape Town All Stars], Katlego Otladisa [Marumo Gallants], Melusi Buthelezi [TS Galaxy] and Patrick Maswanganyi [SuperSport United].

At Orlando Stadium, Gumede will face stiff competition for a place in the starting line-up with Richard Ofori, Sipho Chaine, Melusi Buthelezi and Siyabonga Mpontshane.
