Polokwane City tie down Guinea shotstopper
Polokwane City continued with their efforts to assemble a formidable side for the 2023/24 DStv Premiership after pinning down an Equatorial Guinea goalkeeper.
The Polokwane-based side is confidently aiming to send shock waves on their return to the fashionable league.
Coach Duncan Lechesa has retained faith in the bulk of players that helped the team win the coveted promotion ticket from the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
WHO POLOKWANE CITY PINNED DOWN
Rightfully, they have rewarded Equatorial Guinea goalkeeper Manuel Sapunga with a two-year contract extension, FARPost has learnt.
The Equatorial Guinea goalkeeper joined Polokwane City in July 2022 from Futuro Kings FC amid so much expectation.
Sapunga was, however, restricted to only two appearances last season.
The 31-year-old will continue his battle for first place with Lindokuhle Mathebula albeit in the DStv Premiership.
On the other hand, Polokwane City acquired the services of Oswin Appollis from Pretoria Callies.
Appollis joined the PSL returnees Polokwane City, having previously played in the Ajax Cape Town ranks.
The SuperSport United product is expected to be a regular goal-scorer, just like when he was at the Matsatsantsa Juniors.
Polokwane City also roped in veteran midfielder Given Mashikinya who spent the second half of last season with Sekhukhune United.
Just like Sapunga, Mashikinya also signed a two-year contract with Polokwane City, with so much expected from him.
Mashikinya will add the much-needed experience to Polokwane City in the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season.
The 33-year will be expected to fill in the void left but Mpho Makola who recently left the club.
Makola joined Polokwane City in January after parting ways with Cape Town City. At 37, he pushed Rise and Shine to their limits as they surged to return to the elite division.
Rise and Shine will be making their return to the elite league having been relegated from the DStv Premiership at the end of the 2019/20 season.
