Why Chippa overlooked ‘scouting system’ in search of left-back
Chippa United coach Morgan Mammila has explained why the club overlooked the ‘scouting system’ in search of a left-back ahead of the 2023/24 PSL season.
Last week, the Chilli Boys surprised many as they took to social media to advertise a job for “an exceptional left-back”.
The advertisement from the Eastern Cape club was met with heavy criticism from the football fraternity. It was the first of its kind.

According to the 50-year-old, they opted to tweet in an attempt to get a wide reach and attract many candidates from different areas.
Mammila further confirmed that the club has found the left-back they were looking for.
“I was only looking at one position, which is the left-back that we even advertised that we looking for a left-back. The response was something out of this world; we managed to get a quality left-back,” said Mammila.
“Let’s be honest, a scout can’t be all over Africa, can’t be all over the world, but one tweet can be all over Africa.
“That one tweet helped us to attract over 500 quality left-backs, unlike if it was a scout. He [the scout] can only be able to go Tanzania, Zambia and others.”
CHIPPA UNITED BUSY IN THE TRANSFER MARKET
The Gqeberha outfit has been busy in the transfer market since the window opened on 1 July, strengthening their squad.
Their main aim is to improve from last season’s poor performance. Chippa finished 14th on the log table with 30 points, a point above relegated side Marumo Gallants.
At the moment, they have completed five signings. Chippa have brought in Luvuyo Memela from Richards Bay FC, Menzi Ndwandwe from the now-defunct NFD side All Stars FC, Augustine Mulenga, who was a free agent and Craig Martin from Orlando Pirates.
In addition, Pirates also announced that they have “agreed a deal to send midfielder Goodman Mosele out on loan to Chippa United for the 2023/24 season.”.
