Sundowns ‘keeper Ismail Watenga training with another PSL side

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ismail Watenga is training with another PSL side after spending a season on loan at Marumo Gallants.

The Ugandan shot-stopper signed for the Brazilians in 2020 and went on loan to Chippa United in the same year. He spent 19 months in Gqeberha where he amassed 25 appearances and kept 10 clean sheets.

At the beginning of the 2022/23 season, he returned to Chloorkop to train with his mother club. However, the Tshwane giants sent him on loan again at Bahlabani Ba Ntwa where he only played four matches and recorded only one shut-out.

While Mamelodi Sundowns are in the pre-season camp in the Netherlands, Watenga has been training with Lamontville Golden Arrows.

Abafana Bes’thende are seemingly looking to add the 28-year-old at their disposal ahead of the 2023/24 season. Arrows have struggled between the posts at times with the club chopping and changing the personnel drastically in the previous campaign.

Meanwhile, at some point, Siyabonga Mbatha seemed to be picking up his form but he suffered an injury that put him on the sidelines. And it was a setback for the Durban-based club.

Should the move be completed, Watenga would go in for the number one spot along with Mbatha, Sifiso Mlungwana and Nkosingiphile Gumede.

It also remains to be seen whether it would be another loan stint or a permanent move for the former Vipers SC.

ARROWS SIGNINGS SO FAR

Arrows have already bolstered their squad with the acquisition of Bradley Cross following the departure of Devine Lunga. They have also signed Olwethu Ncube and Angelo Van Rooi from Hungry Lions as well as Tebogo Motloung from Tshakuma Tsha Madzivhandila and Lungelo Nguse from AmaTuks.

Arrows will begin their 2023/24 campaign with a home game against Moroka Swallows on 5 August. They will play the match at their new home ground Mpumalanga Stadium.
