South African striker trying his luck at Zim giants

A South African striker is trying his luck at the Zimbabwean giants, Highlanders, in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.

Highlanders are looking for a reliable goal-getter as they seek to consolidate their place at the summit of the league.

They are the only team in the Zimbabwean league yet to suffer defeat after 16 rounds of matches.

The Castle Lager Premier Soccer League giants are thriving well under former Jose Mourinho’s assistant Baltermar Brito.

Brito has turned Highlanders into a dreaded juggernaut. The veteran gaffer has been searching for a reliable goal-getter.

And it has emerged that a South African striker is trying his luck at the club in Zimbabwe.

WHO IS THE SOUTH AFRICAN FORWARD AT HIGHLANDERS?

Highlanders confirmed that Thabo Lunga Zikode is trialling with the Bulawayo giants, and hopes are high that an agreement will be reached.

Highlanders’ spokesperson Nozibelo Maphosa confirmed that the 27-year-old Zikode is trailing at the club.

“He [Zikode] is training with us. Zikode arrived in the country on Wednesday, but it is up to the coaches if they will sign him or not.

“We have not heard from the coaches or the executive on their position regarding the player. I can confirm that he is training with the club,” Maphosa is quoted by the Newsday.

According to Transfermarkt, Lung Zikode last played for Uthongathi in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. He left the club in July 2022. He has also featured for Free State Stars.

His social media profile reads: “Thabo is a lethal attacker, a goal machine. He is very effective as a number 10 or left midfield. 

“Excellent technique to run with the ball, forward-thinking, can shoot and can dribble [Speed endurance to cover big distances on the pitch].

“He intercepts a lot of balls in the midfield to initiate offensive transitions [positive turnovers]. Good speed for a box-to-box midfielder No 10 playmaker]. 

“He dominates the midfield area and plays like a winner and a leader,” reads the profile.

The Castle Lager Premier Soccer League giants failed to secure one of the league’s top goalscorers. Obriel Chirinda from Bulawayo Chiefs.

Highlanders’ strikers have struggled for goals, but the club has managed to get crucial wins courtesy of goals from defenders.
