Richards Bay FC head coach Kaitano Tembo has made a bold statement about his former side SuperSport United.

The Zimbabwean tactician joined the Natal Rich Boyz in the off-season, replacing Vasili Manousakis who left just ahead of the pre-season.

Tembo was speaking after their 2-0 defeat to Royal AM in the Prince Mangosuthu Legacy Cup on Saturday in Ulundi. He was asked if he was concerned about his side as they will kick off their DStv Premiership campaign with SuperSport who have made several quality signings.

Tembo admitted it would be a tough opening day for his troops like it would be if they faced any team. He then said, considering the signings Gavin Huntโ€™s side has made, they should win the league. And there is โ€œno excuseโ€ about that.

โ€œSuperSport have spent a lot of money now in the past two seasons. They should be winning the league,โ€ said Tembo.

โ€œI donโ€™t think thereโ€™s any excuse for that. They should be competing with teams like Sundowns now. I donโ€™t think thereโ€™s any excuse.

โ€œBut at the same time for us, we have to prepare ourselves. So, we can go out there and get positive results.โ€

Moreover, he also explained why the Spartans couldnโ€™t contend for the league title during his stint as a head coach at the club.

He pointed out the club had no sponsors then, hence, they couldnโ€™t sign players as they can now.

TEMBO ON WHY HE FAILED TO CONTEND FOR LEAGUE AT SUPERSPORT

โ€œThe reason is simple, I think if you have been following SuperSport all along, you will realise that time, there were no sponsors,โ€ he added.

โ€œUsing young players and those young players went out and got sold. So, that was a four-year plan at that time. Now, thereโ€™s sponsorship, thatโ€™s why thereโ€™s money to spend. Itโ€™s simple as that.โ€
