MTN8 quarterfinals: All you need to know

PSL has announced the MTN8 quarterfinals venues and kickoff times, as well as the ticket prices, with the new season set to begin this weekend.

The four matches will take place over two days on Saturday, 12 August and Sunday, 13 August. The first day, Saturday, will see Mamelodi Sundowns taking on Moroka Swallows at Lucas Moripe Stadium at 15:00, while Orlando Pirates will tackle Sekhukhune United at Orlando Stadium at 18:00.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, Cape Town City FC will welcome Kaizer Chiefs at Athlone Stadium at 15:00 while SuperSport United square off with Stellenbosch FC at New Peter Mokaba Stadium at 18:00.

The ticket prices are available from Friday, 4 August at R70.

ORLANDO PIRATES LOOKING TO DEFEND THE TROPHY

The Buccaneers will be aiming to lift the MTN8 trophy for the second time consecutively. They beat AmaZulu FC 1-0 in the final at Moses Mabhida in the previous edition.

On their journey to the final, the Soweto giants overpowered Royal AM in the quarterfinal. And they went on to knock out the Brazilians in the semi-finals.

With Jose Riveiro’s side locking horns with Babina Noko, it will be a repeat of the Nedbank Cup final where Pirates won 2-1 in May. It’s an opportunity for the Limpopo outfit to avenge the defeat.

On the other side, Swallows and Sundowns’ meeting presents a battle between Steve Komphela and his former colleagues. The former Free State Stars coach left the Tshwane giants in the off-season in a shock move to the Birds.

CHIEFS DESPERATE FOR ANY MAJOR TROPHY TO END THE DROUGHT

Meanwhile, Chiefs are desperate for any major trophy in front of them to end the eight-year drought. The last time they hoisted silverware was in 2015 when they won the Absa Premiership under Stuart Baxter.

They’ll be looking to down the 2021 finalists the Citizens in the quarterfinal.

Lastly, it has been a while since SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt won something. The Telkom Knockout 2017 triumph with Bidvest Wits was his last taste. On the other side, Stellies who were in top form last season are out to frustrate the Swanky Boys.
