Sibongiseni Mthethwa handed new role at Stellenbosch FC
Stellenbosch FC have handed their midfielder Sibongiseni Mthethwa a new role ahead of the upcoming season.
Mthethwa has been one of the subjects of speculation this transfer window as he was linked with an exit from the Winelands side. According to multiple reports, the midfielder has been on the radar of Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu FC.
However, it seems like the Soweto giants and Usuthu haven’t done enough to secure the services of the 28-year-old for now. However, with the window only closing at the end of August, they still have a chance to snatch the hard tackler.
Mthethwa was part of the Bafana Bafana squad that played in the COSAFA Cup during the off-season. The regional tournament took place in Durban between 5 and 16 July.
While many expected that he would switch to his next destination after the COSAFA, Mthethwa returned to Stellies as they have been gearing up for the 2023/24 campaign.
Stellenbosch have confirmed that Lee Langeveldt will be a captain while Deano van Rooyen and Mthethwa will assist as vice-captains.
SIBONGISENI GETS NEW ROLE AT STELLENBOSCH FC
“Stellenbosch FC’s leadership group will continue to be led by captain Lee Langeveldt this season, with the veteran goalkeeper supported by vice-captains Deano van Rooyen and Sibongiseni Mthethwa throughout the campaign,” reads Stellenbosch’s statement.
Stellies head coach Steve Barker explained why they chose Mthethwa as the vice-captain. He commended the Bafana Bafana midfielder for the energy he brings to the team.
He also stated the former Black Leopards man involves himself in the community projects where the club’s fans reside.
“With Sibongiseni Mthethwa, who is a vice captain now, he hasn’t been here long but in the short 18 months, his actions have spoken a lot,” said Barker.
“The way he plays, the way he drives the team forward and the energy he brings on the field is massive for us.
“He’s usually involved in trying to do community projects and his involvement with the fans is of a really high level. He is well-respected by his teammates. And we think that having him alongside Lee and Deano makes for a really good captaincy group.”
