Why Pirates’ Mandla Ncikazi is confident about the new season

Orlando Pirates assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi has revealed why he’s confident of the club’s success ahead of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season.

Pirates enjoyed a good run of form last season, which saw them win two trophies under the guidance of Jose Riveiro.

The Buccaneers clinched the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup while finishing runners-up in the league to qualify for the CAF Champions League.

Meanwhile, Pirates beefed up their squad with new signings as they aim to compete in all competitions on offer.

Amongst players signed by the Soweto giants in the off-season are Katlego Otladisa, Melusi Buthelezi, Siphelo Baloni, Patrick Maswanganyi, Lesedi Kapinga, Karim Kimvuidi and Siphamandla Gumede.

In addition, Pirates took a pre-season tour to Spain, where they played against several European clubs.

The friendlies in Europe were aimed at helping the club to get used to playing in different playing conditions to prepare for the Champions League.

With Pirates set to kick off their season on Saturday against Stellenbosch FC, Ncikazi has opened up about the club’s mandate for the new season.

“They brought in new players, but we want to control what we can control. We want to start well because it will be important, but I’m positive based on how we prepared.”

Furthermore, the Sea Robbers parted ways with Graig Martin, Ndumiso Mabena, Nkanyiso Zungu, Kopano Thuntsane and Collins Makgaka.

Pirates will be looking for a positive start to the campaign when they face Stellies at Danie Craven Stadium on Saturday. Kick is at 20:00.
