Gavin Hunt reacts to Campbell’s impressive debut

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has given his verdict on the debut performances of youngster Shandre Campbell.

The 18-year-old was one of the key players for United during their 2-0 win over Richards Bay at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

It was his assist that led to United’s opening goal after he set up Terrence Dzvukamanja. Campbell also played a role in the second goal scored by fellow debutant Etiosa Ighodaro. He was voted the DStv Premiership Man of the Match.

WHAT GAVIN HUNT SAYS ABOUT SHANDRE CAMPELL DEBUT

“I watched him the whole of last year. He still has a lot to do, but he definitely has the ability,” said Hunt after the match.

“But let’s judge people over a period of time, not over one game or two games. In South Africa, you have one good game and then [Judge the player]. Let’s Judge him over a season, two or three but a good start for the kid,” he said.

Campbell also had an impressive season with the club’s DStv Diski challenge side, where he scored 16 goals.

“He should have scored in the first half, but his work rate was good, and he kept the shape. As I said, he hasn’t trained with us for two weeks, which is a problem for me. But what can I do? He is at school.”

THE NEED FOR SUPERSPORT UNITED TO CLOSE ‘GAPS’

“We lost TT [Thatayaone Ditlhokwe], we lost Patrick [Maswanganyi], [Thapelo] Maseko, Jamie Webber and a whole lot of players we have lost. So we have to fill these gaps. That’s what we do.”

Players who made their debut for United on Saturday are Ronald Pfumbidzai, Ime Okon, Shandre Campbell, Phathutshedzo Nange, Etiosa Ighodaro and Jabu Matsio.
