SAFA NEC member in hot water over ‘derogatory, sexist remarks’
A SAFA National Executive Committee [NEC] member is in hot water over disturbing derogatory, sexist and misogynistic remarks on social media.
Monde Montshiwa, who serves as an NEC member of SAFA, made the aggravating comments on his social media platform Facebook.
The SAFA NEC member [Montshiwa] said that the Banyana Banyana team were going to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup for a holiday, and they are dispensable.
His comments raised many eyebrows, with the Black Forum South Africa [BFSA] calling for his immediate resignation from his role.
As explained on their website, BFSA “is a lobby group that advocates for Black solidarity in South Africa. The genesis of the organisation can be traced back to 1988 at the University of South Africa (UNISA), where it was founded by esteemed black professors and academics as UNISA Black Forum.”
With that said, the BFSA felt like Montshiwa’s remarks were perpetuating the oppression of women and seeking to relegate and undermine the Banyana players.
The non-partisan organisation believes that NEC members of SAFA, both national and provincial ought to uphold a stature that is seen to be supporting the national team instead of belittling them.
In addition, the BFSA reckons his comments should be viewed as treasonous for an NEC member. As he is bestowed with the duty of making sure that football is well-developed in the country.
MONDE MOTSHWIWA ALLEGEDLY INSULTED DOCTOR KHUMALO
Motshwiwa is also accused of insulting Bafana Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo via a message text. This is over the remarks that ’16V’ made on the treatment of Banyana players.
“Are you aware Siphiwe [Mkhonza], that I got a message from Monde Montshiwa, who is a SAFA NEC member, ” revealed Khumalo live on Soccerzone a few weeks ago.
“He said to me, Chiefs didn’t give me a job, Pirates and SAFA don’t owe me a cent. The unfortunate part is that it was a personal attack. But he forgot that SAFA NEC members are just there occupying the space because SAFA is a South African entity.
“Everyone in this country is allowed to speak regarding any matter of football in this country. Now, he has exposed that NEC members don’t know anything about football in this country.”
BFSA CALLING FOR MONDE MONTSHIWA’S RESIGNATION
“BFSA is calling for the immediate resignation of the SAFA NEC member who made disturbing derogatory sexist and misogynistic comments against Banyana Banyana on his social media platform, Facebook,” read the BFSA statement.
“Montshiwa’s comments on Banyana Banyana reflect a patriarchal behaviour that continues to systematically undermine and ill-treat the Women’s National Soccer team. Despite their outstanding performances both inter-continentally and globally.
“The team has qualified for two World Cups in succession. They went on to qualify to be in the top 16 of the current ongoing World Cup. And have also won the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. Despite these accolades, the team still suffers unfair treatment from SAFA. It has had to continuously prove that they are deserving of even basic benefits.
“Women in the country still suffer the yoke of triple oppression. They still have to do twice the work compared to their male counterparts to receive half the recognition, support and benefits that their male counterparts receive.
“The Banyana Banyana team experiences all of this on a day-to-day basis. Therefore, it is SAFA that should be ensuring that this does not happen and that the team gets support. Also, enjoys the benefits it deserves, similar or better than those given to Bafana Bafana.”
