Chiefs off to MTN8 semis as Ntseki earns first win in SA’s top-flight
Kaizer Chiefs coach Molefi Ntseki has earned his first win in SA’s top-flight as Amakhosi booked a place in the MTN8 semi-finals after defeating Cape Town City 2-1 at Athlone Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The all-important win was also Ntseki’s first as Chiefs coach following a below-par start to his tenure as head coach of the Soweto giants with a draw and a defeat in his first two games in the DStv Premiership.
However, Ntseki was made to hard work by CT City for the win away from home. Chiefs had to come back from a goal down to seal a last-four spot in the top-eight competition.
And despite a dominant performance with plenty of clear-cut chances, the hosts, CT City, were unable to find a breakthrough against the Soweto giants in the first 20 minutes.
However, the Citizens were lucky enough to break the deadlock in the 23rd minute through Marc van Heerden.
The hosts were doing a fantastic job of frustrating the visitors even after scoring the first goal.
As the half wore on, goal attempts were in constant supply, as it was action-packed.
Towards the half-time break, Molefi Ntseki’s troops were coming at City with guns blazing and making the showdown good viewing for the fans.
With Amakhosi redeeming their momentum, Ashley Du Preez found an equaliser for the Soweto giants in the 36th minute.
LEVEL AT THE BREAK IN CAPE TOWN
The half-time whistle blew with both sides level with a 1-1 scoreline.
In the second stanza, the Cape outfit started by knocking the ball around to keep the game flowing and hoping to add to the scoreline.
But the Eric Tinkler-coached side found it difficult to break down a solid Chiefs rearguard.
Meanwhile, the Glamour Boys couldn’t create much when they were in command of the showpiece.
As the half progressed, the two teams struggled to create anything by way of goalscoring opportunities.
EDSON CASTILLO SOCRES FOR KAIZER CHIEFS
Luckily, in the final minutes of the game, Edson Castillo scored the second goal for Chiefs.
The final whistle blew with Chiefs walked away victorious and qualifying for the MTN8 semi-finals.
Kaizer Chiefs will have to wait for the semi-final draw to find out who they will face next in the tournament.
