Stellenbosch FC secure MTN8 semifinal spot
Stellenbosch FC have advanced to the MTN8 semifinal after a 1-0 win against SuperSport United at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday evening.
Andre de Jong scored the only goal of the match in extra-time. The match had ended 0-0 after regulation time.
Stellenbosch FC join Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, who have all secured a semifinal berth.
The home side were the first to make an attempt as early as the first minute. Siphesihle Ndlovu’s shot from outside the box went over the bar after an assist by Terrence Dzvukamanja.
United were on the attack a few minutes later, but Thalente Mbatha’s shot from outside the box was blocked.
SUPERSPORT UNITED EFFORTS NOT ENOUGH, AS THEY BOW OUT
Mtsatsantsa were the dominating side in the first half-hour mark but couldn’t make anything out of it. The visitors nearly got a lead through Devin Tutus in the 34th minute.
But his header from close range was stopped by a well-placed Washington Arubi. Arubi was making his debut since his return to the club last month.
There wasn’t much to write home about in the later stages of the first half, and the game went to the half-time break at 0-0.
SuperSport continued where they left off in the first half into the second half. Referee Jelly Chavani ignored a penalty appeal from the United players after Thabo Moloisane looked like he handled the ball inside the penalty box.
Shandre Campbell and Terrence Dzvukamanja came close for United on a few occasions, but their efforts were not much of a threat to the Stellies defence. Siphesihle Ndlovu’s long-range shot with 20 minutes remaining did not pose any threat to Stellies.
Grant Margeman missed a glorious opportunity to seal the victory for United in the last minute of regulation time. His shot went over the bar, much to the irritation of coach Gavin Hunt. The match went to extra-time after a statement during regulation time.
SELLENBOSCH FC SECURE MTN8 SEMIFINAL SPOT
It took the header by de Jong from a corner kick to see Stellenbosch through to the semifinals.
Earlier on, Kaizer Chiefs advanced to the semifinals after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Cape Town City at Athlone. Orlando Pirates thrashed Sekhukhune United 5-0, while Mamelodi Sundowns beat Moroka Swallows 1-0.
The semifinal draw will also take place at Peter Mokaba Stadium after the match.
