How CT coach Eric Tinkler judges his arsenal
Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler has revealed how he judges his team and why he has been all smiles even in the aftermath of the defeat to Kaizer Chiefs.
Coach Eric Tinkler and his men succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs in an MTN8 quarter-final match on Sunday in Cape Town.
The Citizens gave a good account of themselves throughout the match but were unlucky to concede a last-gasp goal. Chiefs’ newest signing Edson Castillo scored the goal, which dampened all hopes for Cape Town City.
HOW ERIC TINKLER JUDGES HIS CITIZENS
However, Tinkler has been all smiles despite the loss, comforted by how his team has applied all his formulas.
“As I said, when I win or lose, I’m happy when I see what we do on the training ground being applied and coming out on the field. That’s what I am seeing,” he said.
“Everything that we do in training, I’m seeing it being applied by the players and the fact that they believe in it.
“For me, that’s how I judge the team. I don’t judge my team based on results, whether we get three or zero points.
“I judge it on the performance and what we do on the day-to-day training and preparations.
“If I see that, then I know we are moving in the right direction. I firmly believe we will win more games looking at the way we are playing right now,” he said.
RELIEVING KHANYISA MAYO FROM THE SOLE SCORING RESPONSIBILITY
Tinkler admitted that the scoring responsibility is too big to be burdened on Khanyisa Mayo alone. And has now set his eyes on ensuring all players develop scoring instincts to help the team.
“The finishing, that’s obvious. Mayo [Khanyisa] normally buries all the chances in training, but in the game with pressure, we have missed them,” added Tinkler.
“We have to get better collectively in terms of finishing. And not only giving pressure and leaving the responsibility to Mayo.”
Cape Town City now shift focus to their next DStv Premiership match against SuperSport United on Friday, 18 August, 2023.
