Hunt on what sets ‘any team he coaches’ apart from others

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has made a frank admission on what sets ‘any team he coaches’ apart from others.

The Cape Town-born tactician is one of the most prominent coaches on the local scene. He made his name when he won three consecutive league titles in his first stint with Matsatsantsa.

To prove that his success with the Swanky Boys wasn’t a fluke, he hoisted the league title again with Bidvest Wits in 2017. The following season, he led the club to the Telkom Knockout glory.

Following a draw with AmaZulu FC on Wednesday, Hunt admitted that any team he manages usually doesn’t start the season on high but picks up the form in the fullness of time.

According to the former Kaizer Chiefs mentor, this is because of the way they do their pre-season. Hunt says they do things a “little bit differently” compared to other teams.

“We do things a little bit differently, we generally finish well and get better…any team I’ve coached gets better [as the season continues] for various reasons,” said Hunt.

“You don’t wanna be flying now, but yeah we are strong. The kids are in a big weight training programmes. So, we’re making them stronger and stuff.

“So, we do make things differently and we take time normally to come, I know that. Look at the [when he reaches] 1000 games, you’ll see.”

Hunt’s SuperSport kicked off their campaign in the league with a 2-0 win over the struggling Richards Bay FC last Saturday. They then drew their second game 0-0 with Usuthu.

At the weekend, they shifted the focus to the MTN8, where they hosted Stellenbosch FC at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in the quarterfinal. They lost 1-0 courtesy of Andre De Jong’s extra-time strike.
