AmaZulu FC coach gives update on trialist Phumlani Ntshangase

AmaZulu FC head coach Pablo Franco Martin has given an update on Phumlani Ntshangase who’s under assessment at the club.

The midfielder has been training with Usuthu for over two weeks now, hoping to earn the contract. He has been a free agent for quite some time after parting company with the Motsepe Foundation Championship side Baroka FC in April.

The Spanish mentor says he’s impressed with what he has seen so far in the former Bidvest Wits man. He also confirmed that they are considering him as an option in the midfield. However, they haven’t made a final decision.

“Oh, he’s training, he’s doing well and improving,” said Martin during the club’s media open day on Wednesday.

“And we are really thinking of him as an option but as I told you, it will also depend on the other options that we can get or we cannot get.”

Meanwhile, the Durban-based side has let go of Collins Makgaka, Tebogo Tlolane and Denwin Farmer, who were also under assessment last week. Martin insisted he would have loved to have all of them at his disposal but he already has enough in those positions.

‘I COULD HAVE SIGNED THEM’

“Sometimes you like the player…and that happened last week with some of the players who came here for assessment. And I really like them but already those slots were taken. So, it was impossible for them to sign contracts,” he continued.

“Maybe in a different situation, I could have signed them, so it’s not only about what the player is showing. It’s not only about what the coach thinks, it’s also about what the club can afford and also about what we can afford as a team and as a squad.

“Because we don’t want to have six players in the same position. That would be a waste of money and time for all of us. I prefer that we work with the players we need.

“I prefer the players who are going to be used and who are going to have an opportunity to play. Those who are going to be happy and keep doing good things for their careers instead of being on the bench or in the stands.”
