‘The heavens smiled with us’: Steve Komphela on Sekhukhune win

Moroka Swallows head coach Steve Komphela says ‘the heavens smiled with us’ after their controversial 2-1 win over Sekhukhune United on Wednesday night.

Komphela praised his side’s ‘ruthless’ mentality following the result in the DStv Premiership clash played at New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday night.

This comes after the Dube Birds’ second goal in the dying minutes of the showdown raised many eyebrows, as Gabadinho Mhango was visibly seen pushing goalkeeper Badra Sangare into his own net.

Coach Komphela said that his troops had to be ruthless to ensure they emerged victorious in Polokwane.

Speaking to the media, the ex-Mamelodi Sundowns senior coach praised his side’s fighting spirit on the day.

STEVE KOMPHELA: ‘WE HAD TO BE LITTLE MORE RUTHLESSNESS’

“The game ended the way it has been happening. It was very intense,” said Komphela.

“There were moments either team could win it. And I thought we had a couple of chances even in the first half there were moments where I thoughts we could bury it but we didn’t.

“Sometimes we have to be a little bit more ruthless. There was a chance from Gabadinho Mhango where he dragged the ball from the corner kick and went on to play the ball diagonally to Tshegofatso Mabasa, as we should have taken that one as well.”

Coach Komphela continued: “All in all because of the hard work, determination, and the desire we shown, luck fell on our side whether the goal has got its own questions and all that, listen, you got to work for it as it showed we wanted it desperately.

“I mean, we couldn’t go on with all the good work, good play, and good attitude without getting the results. And the heavens have smiled with us.”

‘A WIN HAS TO BE A WIN’

Komphela went on to say that a win is a win and was pleased with their relentless approach.

“A win has to be a win, but that win has to be classy. This one, I thought we played well and they gave us a good game,” he explained.

“But a win is a reflection of how hard we fought. When results come out like this, football is more like a twin. It responds to how you talk to it.

“There’s a spoken language in football. So, if you work hard for whatever reason you get rewarded.

“In the last three matches, I thought we had the worst arbitrators. And yet again today, we had to fight. But we are happy that we got three points.”

Currently, Swallows are placed sixth on the table with four points after three games.
